Grocery stores in Hawaii are taking a new approach to bringing in customers – one gallon of gas at a time. The prototype for Safeway remodels in Hawaii includes fuel stations, according to Kimo Greenwell, vice president of retail brokerage for JLL, speaking at a PBN retail roundtable Friday and in a follow-up interview. Two sites that recently secured building permits for fuel stations include Lahaina on Maui and Kona on the Big Island. 'They have a whole new prototype, and it often includes doing a fuel station, if they can, if the site allows for it,' said Greenwell, who helps handle Safeway's real estate needs in Hawaii and represents shopping center owners.
